Do Short-Term Missions Make a Difference?

Have any of you read the article in Christianity Today that was written about STM? Check out http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2005/127/22.0.html and http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2005/125/12.0.html

According to Kurt Ver Beek, professor of sociology and third-world development at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, traditional STMs don't do much at all. Interesting discussion going on here.

What do you think of his work?

Thanks for the links to these articles. I think we all (missionaries, mission administrators, pastors, and church members) need to read this type of information with an open mind. Like it or not, though, as is stated in the articles, short-term missions is not going to go away anytime soon. I think the important thing for us as missionary strategists is to come up with creative ways to convert this willingness and interest on the part of so many in the States (and other places) to travel around the world in the name of "missions" into strategic advance for the Kingdom. I would be most interested to hear from other career missionaries any ideas they have about how to most strategically use volunteers and other short-termers on the field.

See my new post about this topic. I wanted to explore it a little further.
